Fix Citrix blurry in Windows 10

Updated – dec 2017

On Windows 10 your Citrix Receiver may show blurry text.  This problem occurs due dynamic display scaling on non DPI aware (older) programs (more about that here). In Windows 10, the DPI scaling is turned on default. So to fix the problem, we need to turn it off for Citrix Receiver.

The affected files for Citrix Receiver are the CDviewer.exe and wfica32.exe.

Fixing Citrix Receiver blurry text on Windows 10

To change this behavior for Citrix Receiver we need to open the properties of the executables,  the CDviewer.exe (found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\ICA Client)

  1. Open the Explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\ICA Client
  2. Right click the CDViewer.exe and choose Properties
  3. Goto the Compatibility tab and disable or override (depending on your Windows 10 build) the DPI scaling
  4. Perform the same steps for the wfica32.exe in the same folder

Disable DPI scaling Disable high DPI

Update: In the recent Win 10 build the Compatibility tab is changed a little.  Under settings check “Override high DPI scaling behavior” and select Scaling performed by: System.

  1. Managed to get scaling to work in Windows 11.
Using Windows 11 21H2 and Citrix Workspace 2207.
Host is a 4K monitor at 150% scaling.

    For both CDViewer and wfica32.exe:
Change High DPI settings > Check Override high DPI scaling behavior
Set “Scaling performed by” to “Application”

  2. Hasn;’t worked for me on Windows 10 pro, Still the blurry icons doesn’t go away ,A thing I found out was that On the VDI it was using citrix display with 8bit Colors.

  3. Hi! This sort of worked for me, but now all my applications in the virtual desktop appear really small. Howver, when I change the screen settings in the virtual desktop, some applications appear blurry again. Any thoughts?

  4. I tried this, but when it still didn’t work I wanted to reset the settings. However, now my resolution jumps back and forth from 3240×2160 to 640×480 (even when not using citrix applications). I have tried to reset citrix workspace, but the only way to stop this from happening is deleting citrix. Anyone that can help?

  5. Somehow instead of using System, I used application override. And now it’s working with my desktops resolution. Thanks

  6. Hi this hasn’t worked for me. Still blurry in citrix albeit only in extended display mode across two screens. Outside of citrix it’s all fine, except the icons which are blurry on extended display mode, very odd, any thoughts please. This has just started happening after the latest windows update.

  7. Hi,

Many thanks for the solution. Just to add, another file’s property need to be changed in the same way. File is ‘wfica32.exe’ ( found in C:Program Files (x86)CitrixICA Client)
