Before we are going to take a look at the best budget access points, let’s first take a look at some features that we need to look for. Because even though we are on a budget, we still want to have the best performance possible for our access point.
The first is really a non-negotiable feature, dual-band capability. This allows devices to connect over the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequency, resulting in optimal bandwidth distribution and reduced interference.
Access points that support Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) are usually the baseline because of their enhanced speed and reliability over the older Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) technology. Even when looking for the best budget access point, we look for Wi-Fi 5 support to ensure a future-proof investment.

UniFi access points offer great performance and are easy to manage. You can install the access points as a standalone device, or use a controller, like the UniFi Express to manage your entire network.

The RE315 also supports TP-Link’s OneMesh system, allowing you to create a unified network across your home. However, you will need a OneMesh-compatible TP-Link router to make use of this feature. If you don’t have one, it won’t be a deal-breaker, but it’s something to be mindful of when considering this extender.
The RE315 does not offer extensive customization options for the extended network, restricting how much tweaking you can do. For tech-savvies wanting to fine-tune their networks, this might be a drawback, but for most, the ease of use will outweigh this limitation.

When you are looking for the best budget access point, there are other options you can explore as well. Adding a new access point to your network isn’t always needed. Sometimes you can solve the issue with one of those options:
Using an Old Router as an Access Point
If you have an old router lying around, it could potentially serve as an access point. By connecting it to your main router via ethernet cable and disabling DHCP, you can give a new life to old hardware. This method not only saves money but also reduces electronic waste.
Steps to convert an old router to an access point:
- Reset the old router to factory settings.
- Disable the DHCP server in the old router settings.
- Assign a static IP address within the main router’s subnet.
- Connect the old router to the main router using an Ethernet cable.
- Configure the wireless settings (SSID, security, etc.) to match or complement the main router.
Access Point vs Extender
Extenders are often a lot cheaper then an access point. But before you buy an extender, it’s important to understand the difference between an access point and a range extender.
An access point creates a new wireless network. It’s connected to the router via a wired connection, offering stability and speed. In contrast, a range extender wirelessly picks up the existing signal and rebroadcasts it, potentially halving the bandwidth which might lead to slower speeds.

I am not a big fan of WiFi extenders, because they often only cause roaming problems in-house and cut your throughput by 50%. I really recommend spending a few dollars more and getting an access point if possible.
